Nos 43 and 45 Gravel Hill are a pair of single-bay, one-and-a-half-storey cottages which were originally one house. The eastern bay (No. 43) was probably open to the ceiling, whereas the western bay (No. 45) still retains its large, boxed-heart joists. A fireplace has been built on the western side of the central tiebeam. The plan form resembles a lobby-entry house accessed through a blocked doorway opposite the chimney stack in no. 45. Some timber framing (three panels) is still exposed above the first floor level in no. 43, whilst the ground floor has been either covered over or replaced with brickwork. The front wall of no. 45 has been entirely replaced with brick. Both halves have been extended at the rear, but these were not investigated.
